While podcasts are generally used to distribute information and entertainment, more and more academic institutions are using them to enhance courses. Samantha Earp, Director of Foreign Language Technology Services at Duke University, discusses how podcasts can be used as a teaching tool.

She first reviews the general history of podcasts and talks about the various ways material is presented. She discusses possible sources of podcasts and presents examples of source material that might be useful as a podcast. Earp also defines best practices and reviews copyright issues. Finally, she gives an overview of how Duke University is integrating podcasts into their curriculum. She also takes questions about typical length of individual podcasts and the issue of grading for such a new concept.

Samantha Earp is Director of Foreign Language Technology Services in Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. She leads instructional technology efforts in Duke's foreign language departments and programs, including planning, project management, development, implementation, assessment and coordination with other campus units. A large portion of her work is in cooperation with Duke's Center for Instructional Technology (CIT), which sponsors incentive grants for Duke faculty and provides a variety of services for faculty who are interested in instructional technology.

Earp also works extensively with the coordinators and directors of the Duke language programs and their teaching staffs to make available a wide variety of multimedia and technology-based materials for their courses and to integrate technology into teaching and learning. She has administrative oversight of the language labs and works very closely with its Director and staff to implement long-range planning goals and to provide instructional support for Duke's language programs. Earp develops training materials and professional development workshops on foreign language technology topics, and participates in the CIT's slate of workshops and IT events for the Duke community.
