The way music is discovered, promoted and sold is beginning to change. Ideally, great music should find its way into the hands of the audience specifically looking for it – but in the past this has been expensive and under the control of major labels. Podcasting is an inexpensive way for musicians to promote their music directly to their fans and reach new fans through sites offering personalized recommendations and social networking.
In this session, you'll hear Ali Partovi of GarageBand.com, C.C. Chapman of the Podsafe Music Network, and Corey Denis of IODA answer questions about how you can promote your music in new ways through podcasts (your own and others), a variety of social networks, virtual worlds, and digital music distributors. You'll also learn how to make the most of your recordings and reach out to potential "customers" directly without having to give up creative and business control of your music. Using podcasting and other digital and web-based tools to build your audience comes with some complications artists need to consider. Protecting your intellectual property rights while keeping distribution flexible may lead artists to use Creative Commons or other new licensing strategies.
Artists with tech backgrounds may seem to have an advantage in this new landscape, but specialized music distribution networks may provide good solutions for artists who are less tech-savvy. The panelists also remind artists that mere numbers of hits and "friends" do not necessarily translate to sales, so artists should remember that social networking is not the ends but is rather the means.
Ali Partovi is CEO of GarageBand.com and Gcast.com, the world's largest independent music community and leading podcasting creation service. GarageBand.com has over 150,000 bands and 2 million monthly visitors, and uses collaborative-filtering to let ordinary people pick the hits in every genre, resulting in radio airplay, publishing deals, and recording contracts for deserving artists. Many top-rated bands at GarageBand.com have gone on to become major label acts. Gcast.com offers free tools for any consumer to easily create and share their own podcast, and currently hosts over 40,000 podcasts. Ali has a long track record with grass-roots ventures.
