A growing number of print publications are using podcasts to keep and increase circulation. Editors from newspapers of various sizes share in this panel discussion their podcasting experiences. Marcus Chan, multimedia editor and podcaster with the San Francisco Chronicle, represents the large-size newspaper. He gives examples of how the San Francisco Chronicle uses podcasting to inform the readers in a wider, deeper and innovative way.
Curt Brandao, columnist and podcaster with The Star-Bulletin, Hawaii, and publisher of DigitalSlop.com, represents the middle-sized print publication. He describes the five key elements of a successful and perfect podcast. Brandao argues that newspapers can only attract new, younger readers via an appealing Internet site.
Finally, Larry LaCost with the Daily Journal in Kankakee, Illinois, shares his lessons of podcasting for a smaller publisher in a rural area. He explains how to incorporate podcasts into magazines and why content is still king. His practical tips on how to use podcasting for regional marketing are of great value for every local newspaper.
Curt Brandao, a columnist and podcaster, has been in the newspaper business for more than 14 years. He has been working in Mississippi (The Columbian-Progress), Florida (The Lakeland Ledger), North Carolina (The Wilmington Star-News), Washington (The Bremerton Sun) and Hawaii (the Honolulu Star-Bulletin), where he has been an editor and newsroom manager since 1998. He is writing a humorous technology column called "Digital Slob" distributed by Universal Press Syndicate, the largest independent newspaper syndicate in the world. Brandao has his journalism degree from Louisiana Tech University and a master's degree in communications from The University of Tennessee.
Marcus Chan is the multimedia editor of the San Francisco Chronicle. He's been thinking a lot about how newspapers can cultivate the next generation of readers.
Larry LaCost is a podcaster with the Daily Journal in Kankakee, Illinois. Back in August of 2005, the newspaper was one of the first to introduce its readers to this new medium and currently broadcasts three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) to more than 500 listeners per show. LaCost started his sales career with traditional media in the late 1980s working in the cable television industry in Long Beach, California. In 1992, he landed a position in the legal division of McGraw-Hill publishers. During the late '90s, he contracted a position at the Bureau of National Affairs. In 2003, he moved to Illinois to become an advertising consultant to local businesses with The Daily Journal.
