PNME 2007: Educational Podcasts:

So there are all sorts of very creative varieties of podcast that people are producing in the world of education and there’s starting to be some research as well on podcast and education and the effectiveness of them there and also, of course, not just public education but also corporate education. Podcasting is playing more and more of a role there and anything that you want to learn now, you can find a podcast pretty much that will take you there. We have iTunes University for example, off the iTunes store. If you haven’t checked that out, that’s a very fascinating resource there for – universities like Stanford University are putting a lot of content up there. If you want to learn a foreign language, there’s a you know, there’s a podcast out there to help you learn that foreign language. Whatever kind of thing that you’re seeking to learn, there’s going to be something out there.

Duke University, some of you maybe familiar with, they did a project a couple of years ago where they required all of the incoming students to have iPods and they did a very careful study of the way that the iPods were used and so on and I’m not going to try to recap all the information but they’ve got the results posted on the web and if you Google – if you Google it, you’ll get those results of that study at Duke and also, the University of Washington, they’ve also published some studies that you’ll find on the web. They did a year-long study of podcasting in particular and how effective that was.

So, gee, in The New Yorker, they’re quoting me. It says, “That’s surprising. Dr. Dave said educational podcast would be the next big wave.” Okay, this is your brain on TiVo and of course, what I’m referring to is the whole idea that in terms of video, a TiVo kind of brought to the party was that you could get the video that you wanted, the content that you wanted when you want and where you want it and of course, this is what podcasting has brought to the party is that you get the content that you want, when you want, where you want it.
