PNME 2007: Educational Podcasts:
The next big thing – though actually, elephants are larger than that, aren’t they? Okay, the next big thing. That elephant doesn’t look so large. There we go. It’s showing up here but not up there. So maybe it’s too late to call it Podcasting, The Next Big Thing. In some ways – in some ways, it’s too late but in other ways, it’s not too late because it hasn’t really reached critical mass yet, podcasting. Those of us who are kind of technically-inclined, we’ve discovered it, we’re terribly enthusiastic about it. There is an audience out there but it’s not a mass audience yet and hopefully, that is something that’s going to happen so it’s still looming as the next big thing, I think.
And education, education often is not the first to pick up on new trends. Although certainly, there are places, there are pockets, education is really grabbed on to podcasting at this point, I have to say and so, I think that podcasting is currently a big thing in education and will be an even bigger thing as time goes on.
There was a panel just before me that was talking about educational podcasting in primary and secondary context and my own experience is more in the higher education so that’s mostly where – what I’ll be talking about but podcasts are being used in a wide variety of ways, teacher to student, a way of getting content out to students, student to teacher, student to parents and friends, student to student.
