PNME 2007: Educational Podcasts:

Male: Now, what type of problems could evolve if in fact you have these interviews. Are we going to be held liable if we’re like suggesting do this, do that and then they’re going to say, well, I heard it on this podcast and now I’m following and now I’m going to sue you because he went ahead and committed suicide not only amongst themselves but they went on a rampage or something.

David Van Nuys: Yes. Well, mine is not an advice show and I’m not giving people advice so hopefully that’s not going to happen to me. And I think that’s one of the reasons why I like the interview formatting because it’s putting somebody else front and center. Well, you know, some of the people that come to mind for me are Terry Gross who I – Fresh Air, you know, and I think she’s just a wonderful interviewer. Bill Moyers is a favorite of mine. Moira Gunn, I’ve already mentioned. Charlie Rose, Larry King. These are kind of well-known interviewer figures. It’s interesting that the key notes here have been in the interview format. You know, I think they decided that, you know, that might be a more engaging way to have these people present here and I kind of agree with that.

So what’s the big pay-off then of interviews? In fact, the big pay-off is engagement, listener engagement. It’s interesting. People are drawn to it. Look at the whole world of – you know, it’s because it’s real. You’re listening to a real person and we’re drawn to that naturally, I think. Look at the rise of quotes reality TV and how compelling that seems to be. How even addictive that seems to be the people so I think that the interview format somehow taps into that as well.

So here are – so it’s possible to do a podcast series such as I’m doing that’s extremely educational but it’s not packaged as education. It’s just people who like to listen to interviews and who like to hear an intelligent conversation are drawn to it. And they might not be actually seeking out education and psychology per se but willy-nilly, they’re getting one.
