PNME 2007 #10: Music Licensing for Podcasts and New Media
Podcast and New Media Expo 2007:You want music beds in your podcast. You may want to do a show about music. But you can’t just rip your CD and incorporate it into your show - unless of course you want the recording industry lawyers knocking on your door. This session is a tutorial on the rules and types of licenses in the music industry you need to understand. You’ll hear war stories from the trenches on licensing music for Internet Radio and Rhapsody from it’s inventor and early web music innovator. You’ll learn the difference between performance rights, mechanical rights, master use rights and synchronization rights. You’ll learn how to contact the appropriate organization to efficiently get the rights to music you want to include and the roles of all the agencies including BMI, ASCAP, SESAC, Sound Exchange and The Harry Fox Agency. We’ll also review tenets of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) as it applies to podcasting and new media. Finally, the concept of fair use will be discussed and applied to podcasting, erasing common misconceptions. You’ll walk away with a confident understanding of the complex rights, rules and regulations for podcasting music. Instructors: Tim Bratton, Colette Vogele, Jonathan Kehl and Kevin Arnold.

Thanks for this one. Really interesting.
FYI you can also license music via www.youlicense.com the online music licensing marketplace.
I started a site with free music beds. There are only 6 pieces up there at the moment but I will post more as I receive them. Hopefully someone can use something they find there. And I am new at this so if anyone has any suggestions let me know.
