Mbox 2 Micro …

Pt MicroSpeaking of Pro Tools … have a look at this interesting new device from Digidesign..

It is essentially the size of a USB thumb drive with an 1/8″ output and corresponding volume control for monitoring Pro Tools sessions. My guess is the lack of input support may limit widespread adaptation. However I think it’s an interesting concept, and it provides an affordable option if you are looking to secure a copy of the Pro Tools software. LE is included. From what I gather a new version of the software is on the horizon, and early adopters will be entitled to a free upgrade.

The Mbox 2 Micro is housed in a rugged anodized aluminum casing and supports up to 24 bit, 48khz digital audio [Mac or PC]. The street price is$279 US, and it will be available within the next few weeks.

In terms of Digidesign’s support for Leopard … you’ll need to be patient.

Leopard: Compatibility Status …

LeoAs of 11:00 AM, EST - Leopard is up and running on my main system. I thought I’d offer a few observations and comments on production tool compatibility and performance.

The installation took less than 30 minutes on my MacPro. Prior to inserting the install disc, I disconnected all peripherals, including my Motu audio interface, my AJA I/O video breakout box, and my video deck. I proceeded to install the OS, opting for the basic upgrade method. That’s about it. One reboot and I was up and running without a hitch.

So far everything works. Guess what? I’m not surprised. All Final Cut Studio applications function as normal, and preexisting projects open with no problem. I’ve noticed improvements in terms of snappiness and speed. No problems with video playback, Quicktime, or audio playback. I’m running the latest Motu drivers for the interface and performance is perfect. Bias Peak Pro 5 XT, iZotope Ozone, Logic 8, and Photoshop CS3 run trouble free as well.

In terms of third party shareware - everything on my system launches and runs on a preliminary basis. I’ll need to dive in on a case to case basis before I can confirm 100% stability. I spent the last few days updating all applications and checking on compatibility. I don’t expect any problems. On the other hand I realize it’s early and problematic issues may surface.

In terms of aesthetics, it’s beautiful. The brushed metal look is gone for good. All proprietary applications that featured this look now default to the new matted gray Leopard standard. My favorite feature so far? Spaces. It really cool.

That’s about it.

Question: How long will the ProTools user base, including those who are forced to use supported hardware - have to wait before they upgrade? My advise … it you can’t wait, switch to Logic or Soundtrack Pro 2.

iZotope RX Audio Restoration …

RxiZotope announced the availability of RX, the newest addition to their product line. This is a stand alone audio restoration suite specifically designed for recording, broadcasting, podcasting, and video production. Features include: artifact free broadband noise reduction, spectral repair synthesis, and distortion removal. RX also efficiently corrects hums, buzzes, pops, and clicks.

What I really like about RX is the fact that it is a stand alone application. Upon initial launch, you are presented with a full fledged audio production UI that can run in the full screen mode. All restoration/correction modes open as independent modules that enhance the user experience. I found it very similar in concept and design to my favorite plugin, iZotope Ozone.

iZotope is offering a free RX trial, and it is available for purchase priced at $349 US. It is noted that plugin versions are planned for early 2008. Registered users of RX will be eligible for free copies. I plan to dig deep into RX over the next few weeks. Stay tuned for additional information.

In other news: iZotope announced a new hardware component - the ANR-B Adaptive Realtime Noise Reduction Processor. This device [designed for broadcasting] removes noise in RT, and offers interface preset management on both Mac and PC. Additional features include: digital and analog I/O/ LAN support, and Word Clock I/O.

Very cool to see iZotope enter the hardware market. My guess is the new ANR-B will be embraced by the professional broadcast and production community. I’ll keep a close eye on it …
