Hi,

You're welcome ;)

I can relate to what you are saying. In fact, I'm comfortable with my knowledge of this subject matter. On the other hand - I have a secret passion - learning how to develop useful applications.

The development community at large is not as helpful as I would have anticipated, and it frustrates the heck out of me.

My point is - I know how it feels, and you will not experience a lack of support here because I'm happy to help.

You have no idea how helpful this is. I've been trying to get a good reference for this for two years. radio producers have given me the snub when they hear i run a podcast and fellow podcasters seem so insecure they are reluctant to share any ideas on their setups or offer advice.

so thank you so much....

Todd,

I have my setup a little different but with similar results. The main difference is that we patch skypecast callers into the overall bridge connection with talkshoe. Thus I am able to have all of the skypecast callers and bridge callers hear each other

The whole idea of the configuration is to support conversation between the Skype callers, the Talkshoe callers, and the Host. It's not just a simple connection diagram. The mix minus buses are created by using the Aux Buses on the mixer.

The Skype output form the main computer feeds a channel on the board. Aux Bus 1 on that channel routes Skype to the hybrid input [to Talkshoe participants].

The Hybrid output [Talkshoe participants] feeds a channel on the board. Aux bus 2 on that channel routes Talkshoe to the input on the main computer. Skype can hear and converse with Talkshoe.

Paul

I have my setup a little different but with similar results. The main difference is that we patch skypecast callers into the overall bridge connection with talkshoe. Thus I am able to have all of the skypecast callers and bridge callers hear each other. It is not perfect as I have to have a strict microphone discpline becasue when we get a 100 or more people on a call 50 on Skype and 50 or so on the bridge everyone but the speakers have to be muted and we open mic people as needed.

In order to make the bridging work I have a couple of devices I use to make sure line leveling remains across two computers and two mixers.

Great write up Paul. Of course the end of the story is that this set up is working very well and the outcome can be heard during my live show on www.talkshoe.com on Sundays at 5PM PST. The Typical Mac User Podcast Live show.

Thanks to Paul for all he does for the community and for working with me towards my end goal.

Thanks my friend

Dennis,

Hijack Pro is essentially creating the mix-minus for you within the application itself. In this case there is no need to change this.

You can process your voice externally with your compressor before it hits the recording software. There are a few things to keep in mind.

The firewire output on the Mackie is pre inset, pre-eq, and pre-fader. This means that the independent tracks sent out via firewire will not be affected by the integrated processor.

However the "main-mix" firewire output is, and will be affected by the incorporated processor. Make sure that you keep this in mind when you set things up in Hijack Pro.

In terms of processor integration, all that is needed is a standard insert cable that is designed to place a serial processor [like a compressor] "in-line" on a channel, with full intention of providing a fully processed signal.

So, the single end of the insert cable gets connected to the insert jack on your mic channel on the mixer. The "tip" end gets connected to the input on your compressor, and the "ring" end gets connected to the output on your compressor. This will send your mic signal out through the processor and it will be returned to the mixer.

You should be all set. By the way, in the future, let's post these inquires on the forum instead of in the blog post comment's area. This will make the information more accessible to others who may need similar assistance.

Let me know how it goes ...

Hi Paul, I have been recording my podcasts with Skype, FireWire through the Onyx 1220, and HiJack Pro. That all has been working but I think if I utilize the mix-minus (and Samson Compressor/De-esser/Limiter) that I would get a better result. Thanks again.

Regards,
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Thank you sir! Your site is awesome!

I'm glad that you are finding the site helpful. ;)

It sounds like the only somewhat complex issue that you are dealing with is the Firewire/Skype requirement. My notes may be a bit out of date on this: to the best of my knowledge, Skype still has problems with Firewire support ...

If you can verify basic Skype/Firewire compatibility, we can then talk about setting up your mix-minus.

Hi Paul, do you have a similar diagram and setup to this but without the Telos? Basically to do Skype, with a Mackie Onyx 1220 with FireWire, MacBook Pro, Samson Compressor, and Zoom H4 recorder? Thank you sir! Your site is awesome!

Regards,
Dennis
