Adobe Soundbooth …

From Adobe:

“Apple is quickly moving its focus towards Intel Macs, and no longer sells Power PC systems in many places. By focusing on Apple’s future, we have been able to bring this powerful application to the Mac platform much more rapidly, and with a stronger feature set”.

So no PPC support.

Update: A senior product manager from Adobe comments on the lack of PPC support.

The Telos One Mix-Minus …

It was after a conversation with Scott Bourne that I sort of realized I may have approached a very important issue in a reversed order. Considering posts on my forum, email correspondence, and telephone inquiries, the implementation of a standard mix minus bus continues to baffle and confuse most people who are considering digital hybrid integration. To date, I have posted two articles [linked in the articles category] that address what I would consider advanced configurations and work-flows in reference to this issue. What I should have done is – begin this series of articles by addressing the basics prior to addressing advanced implementation.

I am now providing a new article that focuses on the basics of mix minus implementation, with specific reference to the Telos One … the industry standard. Keep in mind that the configuration concept can be applied to any digital hybrid with similar I/O options. Also, a stand-alone audio interface can be used without a mixer. There is a strong possibility that I may address this specifically in the very near future.

One final note: I wanted to reference the available I/O options on the back of the Telos One in a clear and efficient manner. It turns out that the graphics provided in the manual are not usable, and there is nothing else around on the web. So – I decided to graphically recreate the Telos One and I/O options myself. This required more work than the composition of the article. I hope you find this installment helpful …

voXover by AudioFile Engineering …

voXover by AudioFile Engineering is a voice-over automation tool and batch recorder built to run exclusively on Mac OSX [10.4 or higher, universal binary]. This tool offers much more than a typical recording application. For example: it uses Bonjour technologies allowing log-in remote access with a Teleprompter mode for Bonjour connected clients.

Additional features include customizable script implementation/work-flows, and the capability of creating ‘takes’ based on lengths of silence and thresholds. There is an integrated rating system, and the application performs automatic trimming/padding of takes when exporting. You can also import pre-existing scripts from various text document formats. Export AIFF, WAV, Wave Editor, SDII or CAF files, and the application supports all audio hardware including support for multi channel inputs. Release date and price TBA.

Motu 8pre Interface …

The new 8pre FireWire audio interface offered by Motu is a flexible, affordable component . The device provides 8 mic preamps [XLR/TRS combo jacks], 8 ADAT inputs and 12 outputs [8 ADAT and 4 analog]. Additional features include: 24-bit, 96kHz digital audio … 20dB Pad on front panel trims … Front Panel Metering … SMPTE Timecode Sync via analog inputs … SMPTE Timecode Generation to any analog output … Dual FireWire ports … CueMix DSP for monitoring/routing, and AudioDesk for recording, editing and mixing. The device includes drivers for both Mac an PC. $550 US.

My guess is the 8pre would mesh well with something like BoomRecorder for easy and efficient on-site multi-track recording sessions. For example panel discussions, multi-host/guest programming, etc.

The Levelator™ …

GigaVox Media has released the Levelator™, an easy to use stand alone application that will simplify your post production work-flow.

Often we are forced to manually ‘level’ problematic audio clips that contain wide variations in peak loudness. For example:

A content producer records an interview with a single hand-held microphone. Due to microphone distance variations and unique vocal characteristics of the host and guest, it’s very possible the recorded audio will be problematic in terms of peak loudness.

In the past, it was necessary to manually address these variations by ‘leveling’ the audio before the final distribution file was processed and encoded. Needless to say this will require a good amount of time, effort, and experience.

Enter the Levelator™. Simply drag any AIFF or WAV file into this stand-alone software processor. Your original file will remain as is, and you will be provided with a processed copy that has been automatically leveled and maximized in terms of loudness. In fact, the processor performs Compression, RMS Normalization and Intelligent Peak Limiting in one step, correcting medium-term variations in loudness. This initial beta release is available for free [non-commercial use only].
