A friend and I were just discussing the Electrovoice 635a professional interview mic. This is a lower cost variation compared to the Re-50b. According to Electrovoice, the 635a is the ‘best known news gathering mic in the world’. This is an omni-directional dynamic mic that offers great sound and incredible durability. It checks in at $99 US, and it is also available in black.

I just bought one of each (635A and RE-50B) and the more expensive RE-50B is far better at rejecting handling noise. The 635A is fine as long as you keep a steady grip, but for 30$ to 50$ more I’m going to return it for the RE-50B. If the mics are mounted and not handled directly they sound almost exactly the same.
Good points. It’s vaguely implied on the EV site. I noticed the spec sheet for the 635a made no reference to noise management, plosive control, etc.
