PodcastRigs Mobile-Pro …

I’ve added a new Mobile-Pro Rig to my group of suggested system configurations. Also, the Peavey PV-8 mixer is now my recommendation for the Basic and Ultra Rigs. On the software side, Bias Peak LE 5 has been added to these systems as well. I hope to have the Pro Level systems revised within the next day or so. Please reference the links in the upper right column.

Just a quick reminder in reference to the PodcastRigs.com concept … the suggested gear, system configurations and recommendations are simply my personal preferences based on budgets and possible work-flows. All the images are live links, and in fact point to online merchants. This is intended to help simplify your research. I don’t sell the gear referenced on the site, and I never ask for ‘donations’. Respectfully, I just don’t feel asking for donations is appropriate.

I hope you find Podcastrigs.com, the Forum and my posts helpful.

Update: Pro Level Rigs updated 03:30 EST.

What about a Windows alternative to Peak in the Basic rig for those of us that don’t have Macs?

    Mark,

I would say have a look at nTrack Studio. It’s a bit different than Peak, however it’s an interesting consideration:

    ptfigg,

I’m a newbie, need a stealth mobile recording rig to capture “man on the street” audio for a performance art project. A couple questions:

    * why do you reccommend the Sony MZ RH1 over the Edirol R09 or the M-Audio Micro Trac? It would seem flash drives are more reliable.

    * what software do you recommend for Windows? I’ve gotten Audacity and it has low functionality. Specifically, I want to be able to race through a 2 hours “street tape”, find the good stuff rapidly and cut/paste it out, then sweeten the sound, get rid of background noise, etc.

    * using Audacity or another product, how can I take a studio vocal and make it sound like a telephone caller? Do I set a filter? What kind? To what settings?

Finally, I tried to join the board and didn’t get activated. Can you check this out? desalaverry@gmail.com, etc.

Thanks! Hope to see you at the upcoming Podcasting Expo in Ontario, CA.

I have first hand experience with minidisc recorders, hence the recommendation. I am not sure why you think CF recorders are more reliable? On the other hand I’m sure both recorders you mention would offer very acceptable results. Also consider the R09 with a 1 gig CF card is well over $100 more in initial cost than the recommended MD recorder…

Have you listened to the interview example that I provided on the system page?

The links included in prior comments point to software applications. Also, if you can spend a bit more, consider Sony Sound Forge and/or Adobe Audition.

A telephone caller effect preset is included in many applications and plugins. iZotope Ozone is an example. There is an ‘OLD AM Radio’ preset that can be tweaked to sound like a telco call. This includes aggressive limiting, compression with a decrease in output, and an slight boost in mid-frequencies using a parametric eq.

You should be all set with board access, and I will be at the Expo! Stop by and say hi.

There is a chance that all media will potentially get corrupted. I had a problem just yesterday with Flash Memory on my Marantz 660.

I am curious if the Electrovoice needs power. On of the nice things about the Marantz 660 is the phantom power option and two XLR channels (right and left) for recording from two microphones.

    Hi Steve,

The RE-50b does not require any power. I have the mic here and I must say it is quite impressive. Great mic with an illustrious history in pro broadcasting.

    Paul!

That Hosea transformer cable IS A FIND! THANKS!

The Pilotcast team is going to Airventure in Oshkosh, WI in a few weeks and we were just discussing the best way to do walk around interviews.

I have used my Archos 400 with internal mic with usable results. Kent uses a 3rd gen iPod. For whatever reason, none of the makers are shipping the promised mic interfaces for my 5th gen IPod yet.

I couldn’t come up with a sucessful way to plug a mic into the input on the Archos because the input is line level. I even bought an XLR transformer with a 1/4″ plug that didn’t work.

I’ll be ordering this cable/transformer Hosea from (I hope!) Sweetwater. We’ve had great luck with their cables.

    Thanks again!

    –Mike

My only reservation is that I need to have two mics for interviews, and the Sony has only one input. Is there some way to process two mics on the same input? A splitter maybe? What are the consequences for sound quality?

In this case I would opt for some sort of small external mixer. This one runs on batteries as well:

Thank you for this immeasurable resource. God Bless you!

Would you reccomend the RE-1 UHF Wireless for on-camera & audio-only interviews or do you reccomend something else?

I will be doing both camera interviews and podcasting. So I will get the Sony MZ-RH1 if I can do wireless with it.

Which wireless mic do you like best?

Thank you for taking the time to consider my question.

    Your Welcome ;)

I can’t imagine you being dissatisfied with the RE-1. It’s a great consideration. I don’t have any first hand experience with it, however it is highly regarded and should suit your needs quite well.
