Telos One … Best Choice

I think it is safe to say the single most asked question in reference to building a Podcastrig is ‘What mic should I purchase’? As this medium progresses, high quality telephone audio capture techniques are a major source of concern and interest as well. As far as I am concerned there is only one piece of gear to consider if you are looking to capture high quality telco audio. Have a look at some of the gear used by NPR. You will notice the Telos One is the preferred Digital Hybrid. This component is available in various form-factors. The standard desk-top hybrid is available for less than $700. If your budget will allow — this is the ticket.

I love the sight, and your podcast. Is has truly help me in my podcast quest. One question about your solution. What about the little podcaster like me. Is there a solution south of $300.00? The only thing holding me back from a launch date is a phone-patch solution. I fear truly promoting my podcast because it is highly dependent on phone interviews.

    Thanks for listening,

    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,

Glad to help. There are various inexpensive options for telco integration. I promise you will be disappointed with the results unfortunately. You may want to look into Skype or something similar. Also, keep an eye on ebay. The Telos One pops up from time to time at a substantial discount.

Thanks for the reply. After writing my hasty comment I looked and listened to some of your earlier articles and podcasts and came to the same conclusion. After a little research I have to agree with you 100%. Digital is the only way to go.

Sorry for being a bone-head, you really know your stuff.

Could we get a little more detail on this please. It’s easy to say “here is what you want” but can you go into the why? and what other options there are and what trade offs there are to going with one of those lower system?

The concept of Podcastrigs is and always has been to offer personal insight. There are other hybrids available in the price range of the Telos One. The JK Audio Inkeeper is another option, however I have no first hand knowledge of this unit. The lower cost models offered by other manufacturers are more susceptible to problematic telco line issues, etc.

Consider there are a few less expensive options for capturing Telco audio. Stop by the forum –>> there are multiple posts in reference to this issue.

Hi, I’m looking for the Telos One online, but I can’t find one for $600. Where do you think I can get one for that price?

    Thanks,

    DavidPaul

Telos One (modem version) is located at: http://www.bswusa.com/proditem.asp?item=ONE

I think they offer it at about $620-ish, and free shipping is included on most of their items.

Btw…I have heard from others that the JK Audio product sounds noisy. no personal experience…but I’d rather go with what i have heard is great audio quality than find out personally and have a delay b/c I have to do a return/exchange. Sometimes spending a few dollars more really does make the difference beterrn okay and great audio quality.

Yup - Telos One is the way to go - either the rackmount or desktop - internally, they’re all the same. The Gentner digital hybrids are also highly regarded. The bargain basement phone patch is a Symetrix TI-101 - I have one… use it as a door stop. Thanks for this page - although I do voice-overs and NOT podcasting (yet?) it’s interesting to see other industry uses for the same equipment.
