Tascam HD-P2 Portable Recorder
The Tascam HD-P2 Portable records up to 192kHz/24 bit files to compact flash media. Broadcast Wave audio files can be transfered to your workstation via firewire. Recordings are locked to the built-in SMPTE timecode input. The recorder offers XLR mic inputs with on-board phantom power and a really cool slanted LCD display. The word is it will be very affordable [less than $700].

I was wondering how this compared to the Marantz PDM 660 and/or PDM 670 portable recorders. I tried out the M-Audio Microtrack and decided it’s not a good fit for what I’m looking for.
Curious as to whether you have any insights on how this unit compares – or where you would spend your money.
Thanks!!
Michael
Michael,
This piece looks fantastic, and I believe it is yet to be released. I am going to ask Tascam to send me one for testing. We’ll see how it goes.
In reference to the Marantz units, I’ll post more info at the forum.

The only spec I didn’t like too much was “Runs on (8) readily available AA batteries” It beats a custom battery but EIGHT?

Matt
Good Point Matt.

A few things to watch out for:
Exactly how good are the preamps? The Marantz portables are lousy. Are these in the same ballpark?
Batteries — I would have preferred the Sound Devices ploy, using readily available camcorder batteries Carrying boxes of AA cells is not my idea of nirvana.
I depend on Mid-Side micing. Since it isn’t mentioned in the Tascam promotional materials, I assume this unit can’t provide Mid-Side monitoring. My now retired HHB Portadat did provide this facility.

I have bought a Tascam HD-P2 I see it comes with a bay to install 8 AA batteries I was wondering when power supply is plugged in does it charge the batteries or must I get a AA battery charger
Thank you
