MXL Desktop Recording Kit for Mac
MXL Microphones announces that its Desktop Recording Kit (DRK) – a professional cardioid condenser microphone , complete with a desktop microphone stand, microphone clip, XLR cable, XLR to Mini-Plug adapter cable, 3.5mm Mini-Plug to 1/4 inch adapter, and power source is now compatible with Macintosh personal computers.

hhmmm, this looks interesting…
Paul, do you know anyone that has this and what’s the take on it?
D,
Both GNC and a show called ‘PodSqod’ featured reviews of the PC variation, which I believe share simialr specs as the Mac version.

The whole kit looks pretty good (with the additional XLR connector). Would the Kel HM-1 connect up with this? paul, you are a good bad influence!
ah I forgot that the HM-1 requires phantom power, so not possible…
Finally got the iBooster today and hope it works ok with my Powerbook.
If you’ve got an iBooster already, can you tell me whether it is battery powered, or relies on a powered 1/8″ input? None of the descriptions on the web seem to say anything about how it is powered.
If it has its own power it could be really useful with portable MP3 recorders that have a “line level” input, and I’d seriously consider buying one to work with mine.
Frank, it’s not battery powered – requires AC adapter (9V)
I purchased the PC version of the Mic-set and found out that it would not work properly with my Mac. Before I read about the iBooster I purchased the iMic (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/). It works perfect with that. The iMic needs no battery because it is USB-powered. Since the microphone can be powered by a 9V battery and the iMic is USB-powered it is a good semi-portable solution with my powerbook.
I have the PC version and am very pleased with the quality of the sound. I selected this, as I can marry it with a mini-disc player/recorder purchased from eBay. It’s a cheap, yet high quality portable rig! I then come back to my workstation and load it through my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX unit. This external USB sound device can also be used on my laptop for extended trips and interviews. I also use a microphone arm at my workstation to mount the mic for work at my workstation. In short it’s a good mic that provides a great deal of portability.
And thanks for a good job with this blog/podcast! Sharing your experience and knowledge helps all your listeners.
Thanks for the feedback John.
