Fostex FR-2 Pro Compact Flash Recorder
The Fostex Fr-2 portable is not something you can slip into your pocket. The unit is designed for broadcast/sound effects acquisition and TV/radio audio capture. This is a great tool for ‘location’ recording of podcasts. The unit can record up to 24 bit, 192khz Broadcast Wav [BWF] files to eithier PCMCIA 1.8 hard drives or Type II CF cards. XLR mic inputs/AES/EBU or S/P DIF digital audio inputs/outputs, onboard USB and a host of other features. You can also directly connect a USB keyboard to the FR-2 for data input. $1299.

I’ve been looking at this and similar recorders in the Marantz line. This one is the most expensive of the bunch, but also the best-sounding and highest recording quality. For podcasting, maybe not such a big deal, but I think in the long run, this unit will hold its value and perform better.
I’ll probably upgrade from DAT to the FR-2 within a month or 2.
Michael,
I agree…I think this unit is well worth the investment. The only draw-back is its size relative to an Edirol R-1 for example. I think if size/cost is not an issue this is something to seriously consider. Believe me…I have my eye on it…

Uggh, flash again. I was burned on the Fostex MR8 with it’s dependency on “special” flash cards that had IO speeds high enough to read/write audio. I think they are getting better. But this is why I’m partial to HDs.
